Container Gardening Workshop Level 1

Learn how to grow your own food in small, urban spaces! In this workshop we will cover what food plants grow best in containers and how to prepare easy and affordable potting soil. We will talk about how a container is different from an in-ground garden and what are the important keys to success with container gardens, from window sills to patios. We will discuss creative and cheap options for planters and containers and offer up some valuable resources for ongoing learning. Participants should bring a willingness to get their hands dirty! Each participant will receive a copy of the EYA's Container Gardening Guide and a plant to take home!


About the Facilitator:

Jodi Peters works for the Environmental Youth Alliance. She facilitates all sorts of skill building workshops, teaches permaculture principles and applications, and urban agriculture techniques. She also helps oversee EYA’s Urban Seeds program, and works with volunteers and staff to save and process seed from the EYA’s Youth Garden. She loves spending time out of the office, picking up coffee grounds to make into compost, working in the beautiful urban green spaces that EYA is involved in creating and maintaining, and she's always delighted to see the creatures big and small that share these spaces with us!


Payment: 

*What does sliding scale payment method mean?  This means we're offering this workshop on a pay-as-you-can basis to make it accessible to students and folks on a budget. You can pay using paypal or pay at the door. Cash and cheques made payable to the SFU Local Food Project will be accepted at the workshop. To pay at the door, click on the "Order Now" button on the registration page and it will bring you to an order summery page. At the bottom of this page you can then select "show other payment options" and then "Pay at the Door".  From here you can print out your ticket. 

 

 

Suggested payment: Students: $5 or $15; Staff/Faculty: $15 or 25

SFU Local food Project



The Urban Agricultural Skills Training Program is a workshop series designed to equip SFU students and community members with the skills to produce, preserve, and prepare their own food. Participants will engage in discussions of our food systems both locally and globally and gain tools to create change in their own lives and communities.

The SFU Local Food Project is a campus based organization that aims to increase the amount of local food available on campus, create awareness of the benefits of local food, and encourage and support alternative food production and distribution systems on campus.
